St. Peter and Paul (Lindenfels)

St. Peter and Paul is a Catholic parish church in Lindenfels in the Bergstrasse district in Hesse . Although it was not consecrated until 1745, it is the oldest church in the city.

history

A Catholic community only formed in Lindenfels after the re-admission of Catholics in the Electoral Palatinate in 1685. The Catholics first used the castle chapel of Lindenfels Castle , which had been abandoned since the Reformation , before starting their own church on a specially fortified plateau at the entrance to the castle from 1727 began to erect. The church was built by Elector Karl III. Philipp approved collections, financed through compulsory labor and fines, and dragged on for years. The shell was finished in 1732 and the church was consecrated in 1745. In 1893 a sacristy was added to the church, and in 1896 the windows were changed. An extensive renovation took place in 1974.

The outside of the church is a plain rectangular building with a crooked hip roof , and an octagonal roof turret is attached . The single-nave church has a slightly elevated, recessed choir with a 5/8 end. A gallery has moved in above the entrance , on which the organ, which was purchased in 1757, is located.

Due to the limited space on the castle hill, the church is not traditionally oriented to the east, but to the northwest.
