Evelyn Bonaci

Evelyn Bonaci , UOM (born November 29, 1916 in Sliema , † December 16, 2008 ) was a Maltese politician of the Partit Laburista (Malta Labor Party (PL / MLP)), the social democratic party of Malta. In addition to the future President Agatha Barbara , she was the second woman to win a seat in parliament after independence in 1966.

Life

Evelyn Bonaci supported her husband Louis ("Ġiġi") in two unsuccessful candidacies in 1953 and 1955. Together with Agatha Barbara, she founded the party's women's division in 1961. She was later president of the women's division of the party club in Birkirkara and later a member of the national executive committee. Albert Hyzler was able to convince her to run for office in 1966.

In 1966 Bonaci was elected to the House of Representatives , the parliament of the Republic of Malta, for constituency 6 ( Birkirkara ) for the first time , and she was able to defend her seat in two further terms in 1971 and 1976 . When Bonaci left the House of Representatives in November 1981, Anne Agius Ferrante (PN) was the third woman in the Maltese parliament at the end of 1980. After they left, she continued to work for her party.

Evelyn Bonaci died on December 16, 2008. She was considered an exemplary member of her party, known for her ethical respect for political opponents.

Bonaci was married and had three daughters and two sons, one of whom died before her. Her brother Cikku Bonaci was from 1951 to 1962 a member of the constituencies 5 and 1 and in the cabinet Mintoff I Minister for Industry and Trade (1955-1956).

Awards

On December 13, 1995, Evelyn Bonaci was appointed First Officer (UOM) of the National Order of Merit .
