Evelyn Brent (born October 20, 1899 in Tampa , Florida , † June 4, 1975 in Los Angeles , California ; actually: Mary Elizabeth Riggs ) was an American actress of the silent film era .

Career

The actress began appearing in films as a teenager and has taken on leading roles since 1916. In 1917 she appeared alongside John Barrymore in Raffles the Amateur Cracksma n. After a few films in England in the early 1920s, she returned to Hollywood in 1922 with a multi-year contract . She became a popular actress in B-films (on FBO ) and has occasionally starred in A-productions, mostly on Paramount Pictures . In 1923 she was named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars .

It was Josef von Sternberg who paved Brent's rise to a top star by playing the prostitute Feathers in Underworld from 1927 and his last command from the following year. The studio used the actress in the first self-produced 100% sound film Interference , but all in all the change to sound film put an end to the promising approaches.
