Evelyn Crystal Pielou ( February 20, 1924 - July 16, 2016 ) was a Canadian ecologist and Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Ecology at the University of Lethbridge ( Alberta , Canada ).

Live and act

Evelyn Crystal Pielou initially worked as a scientist for the Canadian Department of Forestry (1963-64) and the Canadian Department of Agriculture (1964-67). She later became Professor of Biology at Queen's University , Kingston, Ontario (1968–1971) and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia (1974–1981) and finally as Oil Sands Environmental Research Professor at the University of Lethbridge , Alberta ( 1981-1986). In 1996 she was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Evelyn Pielou made an important contribution to the statistically proven ecology and the modeling (modeling) of natural systems. She developed the mathematical basis for the Pielou equality index , today one of the most important objects of investigation in landscape ecology and nature conservation biology. It describes the equal or unequal distribution of faunistic species in an area. Evelyn Pielou last lived in Comox (British Columbia, Canada).
