Nelson was the daughter of Russian immigrants and studied at the University of Toronto and McMaster University with a bachelor's degree in 1965 and a master's degree in 1967 ( Finiteness of semigroups of operators in universal algebra , Canadian J. Math.). In 1970 she received her doctorate from Günther Bruns ( The lattice of equational classes of commutative semigroups ). She then did research at McMaster University, where she became an associate professor in 1978 and a professor in 1983. From 1982 to 1984 she headed the Faculty of Computer Science. After she had to give up the management of the faculty due to illness, she died of cancer in 1987.

The Krieger Nelson Prize for Women in Mathematics in Canada is named after her and Cecilia Krieger .
