Evelyn Stuart

Lord Evelyn James Stuart ( May 7, 1773 - August 16, 1842 ) was a British officer and politician.

Evelyn Stuart came from an old branch line of the Stuarts , which descended from the Scottish King Robert II . He was born the third son of John Stuart and his wife Charlotte Jane. After his father was made the first Marquess of Bute in 1796 , he was given the courtesy title of Lord Stuart . He attended Eton College from 1787 before joining the 6th Regiment of Foot as an ensign in 1789 . In 1791 he was promoted to lieutenant. In 1793 he served in the 1st Foot Guard , in 1797 was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 21st Regiment of Foot and in 1800 Lieutenant-Governor of Fort Augustus near Inverness . In 1802 he served with the 52nd Regiment of Foot . In 1805 he was promoted to colonel, but in 1806 he resigned from the army.

To succeed his late older brother John , Stuart was elected to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Cardiff in 1794 at the initiative of his father . Due to his service as an officer, he hardly attended the meetings and resigned from his mandate in 1802. His younger brother William was chosen as his successor . After his death in 1814, he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for Cardiff, but because of his poor health did not take his seat and resigned in 1818. His nephew James Crichton-Stuart was elected MP to succeed him.

Stuart died unmarried.
