The Evergreen Line is an underground line of the SkyTrain Vancouver , the local transport system of the metropolitan area of Metro Vancouver in Canada . The standard gauge line is 10.9 km long and includes six stations. It connects the Lougheed Town Center station in Burnaby with Lafarge Lake – Douglas in Coquitlam . Construction work began in 2012. The route opened in December 2016. The Evergreen Line takes over part of the existing Millennium Line . The fully automatic trains with linear motors customary in the SkyTrain are used.

route

The route begins at Lougheed Town Center station in Burnaby , which connects to over a dozen bus routes and the Millennium Line . Since the opening in 2002 there has been an additional platform, which was initially left in the shell and remained unused for over a decade. Shortly after leaving the station, the route, which initially leads southeast, makes a tight curve to get to North Street. Raised it follows this street and the subsequent Clarke Road northwards to the district of Burquitlam. This is followed by a 2 km long tunnel in a northeastern direction under Snake Hill. In contrast to the Canada Line , this tunnel has only one tube (diameter 9.84 m), the two tracks will be separated by a wall.

The northern tunnel portal is in the area of the city of Port Moody . There the Evergreen Line follows the Canadian Pacific Railway (which is operated by the West Coast Express ) in an easterly direction . At the Inlet Center station , the Evergreen Line changes over a bridge from the south to the north side of the railway line. After the city limits of Coquitlam , the second elevated part of the line begins, which initially continues to run parallel to the railway line until Coquitlam Central station . Eventually the Evergreen Line turns north and follows the Pinetree Way to the Lafarge Lake – Douglas terminus .

history

Routing

Originally, Port Moody and Coquitlam were to be developed through a branch of the Millennium Line, which opened in 2002 . However, when the project costs increased, this was postponed indefinitely. At the Lougheed Town Center station , an additional platform was built in the shell , which initially remained unused. The transport company TransLink examined several options for the northeast corridor: a railroad line with diesel multiple units , a light rail , a new SkyTrain line and an express bus line. In 2004, a decision was made in favor of a light rail system, as it blends in better with the surroundings, is adapted to the volume of traffic and is the cheapest.

Detailed planning for a light rail system began in October 2006. After several public hearings, rumors spread in the local press in the summer of 2007 that the project had been abandoned. In July 2007, TransLink announced that the Evergreen Line would continue to enjoy priority, but that the project would be revised again. On February 1, 2008, the British Columbia Province Government and TransLink announced that they would now prefer the Advanced Light Rapid Transit system used on the remaining SkyTrain lines. There were two possible routes to choose from: one with a tunnel under Snake Hill and one with an entirely above-ground route. After a six-week hearing period, the surrounding communities unanimously agreed in favor of the tunnel variant.

A report by the TransLink supervisory authority published in September 2009 came to the conclusion that an expansion of the SkyTrain network without a predictable source of income for operating costs was highly unlikely. The uncertain financing situation resulted in a two-year delay in planning. In October 2011, the mayors of the municipalities belonging to the TransLink area approved the Moving Forward expansion program : Among other things, an increase in the local fuel tax of two cents per liter should help finance the Evergreen Line. The total cost of the 10.9 km route was budgeted at CAD 1.43 billion . Of this, the Canadian federal government should contribute 424 million, the province of British Columbia should contribute 586 million, TransLink 400 million, and other partners 21 million.

The tendering process reached its final stage in November 2011, when the provincial Ministry of Transport shortlisted three consortia. Preparatory work began in January 2012 and included the demolition of buildings and the laying of underground lines. The construction company SNC Lavalin won the tender on October 4, 2012. The crucial construction phase began in February 2013 with work on the north portal of the Snake Hill Tunnel. It was planned that the Evergreen Line should be operational in summer 2016; it is to take over from the Millennium Line the section between the stations Lougheed Town Center and VCC-Clark .
