Ewald Pusich (born January 23, 1934 in Solec Kujawski , Bromberg district / Bydgoszcz Voivodeship , Poland ; † March 7, 2013 in Herford ) was a German double bass player .

Life

Ewald Pusich was the third son of the locksmith and later welder and sewer worker August Hugo Pusich (* 1907 in Ruda Kozlonka, † 1992 in Extertal) and his wife, the seamstress Helene Pusich, née. Hehnke (* 1907 in Ostrowa, † 1988 in Duisburg). The Pusich parents belonged to the German minority in the former province of Posen during the first Polish republic . They emigrated to Germany with their son Ewald in 1938 and settled in Berlin.

Ewald Pusich attended elementary school in Berlin until the end of the war. In autumn 1945, the parents moved to Unterstedt as internal German war refugees . Ewald Pusich continued to attend elementary school there until he was 14 years old.

After leaving school, he took drum lessons with the city bandmaster Willi Völlert in Rotenburg . He later recommended his students to the chamber musician Otto Schumann, first timpanist at the Philharmonic State Orchestra Bremen and teacher at the Bremen Music School, for further lessons in the subject of timpani. After studying with Otto Schumann for two years, Ewald Pusich had to give up classes because his parents, August Hugo and Helene Pusich, moved to Duisburg, where his father August Pusich found a job as a welder and sewer worker. Due to differences between father and son about his career choice and for financial reasons, Ewald Pusich was initially unable to continue his training and therefore worked first as a drummer, later as a freelance double bass player, mostly performing in coffee houses. During this time he decided to devote his further musical training to the double bass. From 1955 to 1958 Ewald Pusich took private lessons with Paul Erdmann, solo double bass player at the municipal orchestra in Essen and teacher at the Folkwang School.

During his studies with Paul Erdmann, he regularly played the temporary help in the Westphalian Symphony Orchestra in Lünen under the direction of General Music Director Herwig until April 1958.

After a successful audition and approval of his application by the chief conductor Hermann Scherchen , Ewald Pusich became a double bass player in the Northwest German Philharmonic in Herford in 1959 . In 1962 he became their first deputy solo double bass player. In 1971 he was awarded the title and honorary title of "chamber musician" by the chairman of the Northwest German Philharmonic Association, Herford City Director Walter Abel. From 1984 to 1988 he was acting first solo double bass player in the Northwest German Philharmonic. In 1999 Pusich retired.

Ewald Pusich died after severe cancer in March 2013 in Herford.

family

Ewald Pusich was first married to Ingeburg Erika Seifert (born 1934) in 1959 in Bonn. The marriage ended in divorce in 1989. From this marriage two daughters were born. In the same year Ewald Pusich married the chamber musician of the Northwest German Philharmonic Edith Wahl.
