Ewald Sigismund Tobien

Ewald Sigismund Tobien (born March 20 . Jul / 1. April  1811 greg. In Jacob City , † January 14 jul. / 26 January  1860 greg. In Tartu ) was a Baltic German legal scholar .

Tobien's parents were the councilor and businessman Karl Friedrich Tobien and Sophia Gertruda, b. Harder.

Career

He attended the district school in Jakobstadt and studied from 1826 to 1833 at the Gouvernement-Gymnasium (Krons-Gymnasium) in Riga . In 1839 Tobien became the Dr. jur. from the University of Halle an der Saale and in 1844 the Dr. jur. of the University of St. Petersburg . From 1838 to 1840 he worked in Dorpat as secretary of the school directorates.

From 1845 to 1860 Tobien taught as a professor of Russian law at the Imperial University of Dorpat . From 1851 to 1854 he was dean and from 1852 to 1853 deputy vice-rector of the university. From 1859 to 1860 Tobien was President of the Estonian Learned Society .
