Itai no wa Iya nano de Bōgyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. ( jap. 痛 い の は 嫌 な の で 防御 力 に 極 振 り し た い と 思 い ま す。 ) is a Japanese online novel series by Yuumikan that has been published since 2016. It was adapted as a light novel , manga and anime television series and can be classified into the genres Isekai , comedy , action and science fiction . The story tells of a girl who tries out an online computer game for the first time, relies entirely on protective equipment for her character and is so surprisingly successful. The international version of the anime series was also called Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. known.

Kaede Honjō was invited to a new online game by her friend. In NewWorld Online you immerse yourself completely in the fantasy world through virtual reality , but Kaede is hesitant at first because she has never played such an online game. When she first ventures into it without her friend, she puts everything on defense when creating her character for safety as she wants to avoid all damage and pain. In her first fights as a maple , it turns out that although she is weak in attack and very slow, she is extremely resilient. In addition, the high values for defense from the beginning quickly give her bonuses and special skills, which soon build up more and more. Maple finds fun in the game and makes first new friends: Kuromu, who also plays as a shield fighter, and the blacksmith Iz, who makes her new armor. While Sally still cannot take part in the game, Maple already successfully takes part in the first event in NewWorld Online and gains a certain fame. She can usually easily defeat her opponents, as she can already absorb the skills of others and attack them with poison. When Sally comes in, she is completely amazed how good her friend is at the game.
Release history
The stories initially appeared in series from 2016 on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform . Since September 2017, Fujimi Shobo has also published an adaptation illustrated by Koin as a light novel . A manga version drawn by Jirō Oimoto started on May 26, 2018 in Comp Ace magazine . Its publisher Kadokawa Shoten brought out the chapters in three volumes so far. The first volume sold over 22,000 copies in Japan in the first week of its release.
At the beginning of August 2020 it was announced that the light novel series had sold over a million times in Japan alone.
Anime adaptation
Directed by Mirai Minato , Shin Oonuma , Studio Silver Link created an adaptation of the material as an anime for Japanese television. The main writer was Fumihiko Shimo , who also wrote the episode scripts with Shingo Nagai . The character design was created by Kazuya Hirata and the artistic direction was Yūki Araki . The total of 12 episodes were shown from January 8 to March 25, 2020 by the channels AT-X , Tokyo MX , BS11 , ABC and TV Aichi . At the same time, an international publication took place via several streaming platforms, including above all via Wakanim with German, French, Russian and English subtitles.
With the broadcast of the twelfth and final episode of the series on March 25, 2020, the production of a second season was confirmed.

The music in the series was composed by Taro Masuda . The opening song is Kyūkyoku Unbalance! ( 究 極 ア ン バ ラ ン ス! ) By Junjō no Afilia and the credits are highlighted with Play the world by Rico Sasaki. He also sang the song Good Night used in the episodes .
