Ewarton is a small town in inland Jamaica . The city is located in County Middlesex in the Parish Saint Catherine . In 2010, Ewarton had a population of 14,096 people. The origin of the name Ewarton is uncertain. Most likely a connection between the family name Ewart and the Creole word Ton ( Town = city ).
Churches
Ewarton has churches of ten different Christian denominations: the Seventh-day Adventists , the Anglican Church , the Baptists , the Church of Christ , the Church of God of Prophecy , the Gospel Hall , the Gospel Lighthouse , the King Chapel , the Methodists and the Roman Catholic Church (St. Catherine of Siena).
economy
The city's largest employer is the ALCAN Bauxite-Alumina Plant . The company owns one of the largest bauxite opencast mines in Jamaica east of the city . In Ewarton there are three large supermarkets, two petrol stations and a bakery, but there is only one public telephone in the entire village. Ewarton does not have a branch of the St. Catherine Parish Library , but a book bus visits the town on a regular basis.
From 1885 to 1947 there was a direct rail link from Ewarton to Spanish Town . The station was closed in 1947 due to a lack of profitability.
