Ewen Gur

Ewen Gur (born May 20, 1984 in Ambilly , France ) is a French painter and musician who lives and works in Berlin .

Life

Ewen Gur was born in Ambilly ( Haute-Savoie ) in 1984 and grew up in the area of Tours . He began to draw at an early age, mainly inspired by video games and comics , the latter and the like. a. Works by Marcel Gotlib and André Franquin . As a teenager, Ewen Gur attended comic master classes for several years to improve his technique and learn from local artists. He published work in the local magazine “Dynamite Comics”.

In 2002, Gur graduated from high school with a focus on “applied arts” in Tours, France. From 2002 to 2004 he completed a university degree in visual communication / graphic design in Chaumont , France, from which he graduated. From 2004 to 2006 he studied music recording / music history at the Jazz à Tours College in Tours, France.

After graduating from high school, Gur played as a bass player in various bands . To this day, elements and expressions from rock and jazz can be found in his works. At the age of 24, Gur moved to Berlin. In November 2013, he married the French jazz singer Delphine Maillard , whom he met while studying music.

Gur's figurative works are created with clear, black lines. The urban characters depicted are mostly self-destructive, the main theme being the business world or subversive worlds from rock and punk . Backgrounds have bright, mostly warm colors. The works are created with acrylic on canvas or digitized on the graphics tablet. The perfected line management sometimes makes it difficult to see whether the images were created digitally or haptically. Gur is left handed .

Gur's work has been used to design various products, including champagne bottles and shoe collections. In July 2011 he won the “PREMIUM Window Dresser Award” at the PREMIUM fashion fair, and in 2014 the FILA shoe brand created a collection with him.

La femme rock'n'roll

In an exhibition in the Galeries Lafayette Berlin (March 28 to April 11, 2013) Gur presented women as the main figure in his work for the first time. “La Femme Rock'n'Roll” are fictional portraits of women from rock'n'roll and punk. The women have a sublime look, appear independent and are represented with elements such as tattoos, cigarettes or musical instruments such as bass or amplifier .
