Carl Benton Reid

Carl Benton Reid (born August 14, 1893 in Lansing , Michigan , † March 16, 1973 in Hollywood , California ) was an American actor.

Life

Carl Benton Reid studied drama at the Carnegie Institute of Technology at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh . In the 1920s he performed at the Cleveland Play House for several years .

From February 1939 he played the role of the ruthless businessman Oscar Hubbard in Lillian Hellman's play The Little Foxes , in 1946 he was part of the cast of the premiere of Eugene O'Neill's play The Iceman Cometh and was praised for his performance.

He made his film debut in 1941 in The Little Foxes , where he took over his role from Broadway. He soon became a popular supporting role actor and worked under renowned directors. In addition to William Wyler ( The Little Foxes ), these included Michael Curtiz ( The Story of Will Rogers , Sinuhe the Egyptians ), Delmer Daves ( The Last Wagon ), William Dieterle ( Tennessee Johnson , Tommy makes the race ), Edward Dmytryk ( The Sniper , The Broken Lance , The Left Hand of God ), Lewis Milestone ( The North Star , Written In Blood ), Nicholas Ray ( A Lonely Place ), Douglas Sirk ( The Angel With Bloody Wings ), John Sturges ( Treason at Fort Bravo ), Richard Thorpe ( The great Caruso , Stronger than All Chains , Athena ) and Jacques Tourneur ( Wichita ). His favorite film role was that of Senator Clem Rogers in The Story of Will Rogers , the biopic about the life of comedian Will Rogers .

Even in the 1960s, Reid still worked sporadically in films, but was mainly seen in television series. His last film role was the judge in Madame X in 1966 . He also had his last television appearances this year, a double episode each in the series Amos Burke and FBI . In total, he appeared in about 50 films and over 100 series episodes.

He was married to Hazel Harrington until his death and had a daughter named Shirley Jane.
