Interior

The ex-cathedral of Elvas ( Portuguese Sé Catedral Nossa Senhora d'Assunção ), consecrated to the Assumption of Mary , was the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Elvas in the eastern Portuguese city of Elvas from 1570 to 1881 .

location

Today's parish church is located on the old town hill of the border town of Elvas at a height of approx. 350  m . The choir of the former cathedral is oriented to the northwest; the entrance therefore faces southeast.

history

The diocese of Elvas was formed in 1570 from cessions of territory from the Archdiocese of Évora , to which it was also subject as a suffragan until September 30, 1881. The church and later cathedral had already been built in the years 1517–1537. In the 18th century it was given a baroque interior.

architecture

The facade of the church, which can be reached via two staircases, makes a rather forbidding and quite defensive impression; the renaissance portal added later (around 1550) has a triangular gable and is located at the end of a passage under the bell tower (torre siniera) covered with a stone pyramid roof .

The interior of the church has three naves , basilica and vaulted ribs , with the individual vaulted yokes having a slight bust and containing vegetable paintings. The choir apex chapel (capela-mor) designed in the Baroque style is - as is customary in Portugal - extended to the east to accommodate choir stalls, etc.; the chapels at the end of the significantly shorter aisles contain baroque altars.
