Excite Truck is a video game exclusively for the Wii game console , developed by Monster Games and published by Nintendo in Europe on February 16, 2007. The specialty of this racing game is the control of the off-road trucks, which are mainly steered by tilting and tilting the Wii remote control. The title is based on the games Excitebike and Excitebike 64 , which appeared on earlier platforms. With regard to the game principle, however, there are only a few things in common.

control

All you need to control the trucks is the Wii remote control, which is held horizontally throughout the game. The trucks are steered by tilting sideways, while tilting changes the trajectory when jumping. Acceleration and braking are operated by buttons one and two. Thanks to this simple control, even newcomers can quickly find their way into the game.

Game modes

Excite Truck contains the game modes Training , Excite Race , Challenge and Versus (multiplayer mode).

training

The basic control functions are explained to the player in a total of 18 training units. The training mode is divided into Basics 1 and Basics 2 , which each consist of five units, and Stunts 1 and Stunts 2 , which each consist of four units. A training session cannot be started until the previous one has been successfully completed.

Excite Race

In Excite Race , a race is driven against five computer opponents over several laps. At the beginning the player can choose between three different trucks, which differ in speed, turbo, grip and jump. New trucks will be unlocked as the game progresses. The aim of Excite Race is to collect as many stars as possible, which are won through stunts. A certain time must not be exceeded. If the specified number of stars is not reached at the end of the race, it is lost. In order to win a race, it is not necessary to take first place, since victory and defeat depend solely on the number of stars collected during the race, but if the player is higher, bonus stars will be credited to those won in the race can be added. Depending on the stars collected in the race, the player is judged with a rank. If he gets a D or C rank, he has not collected enough stars and the race is lost. With B, A and S rank, the race is won. If the player has the S-rank in all races, the Super Excite Race mode is activated, which offers a higher degree of difficulty. If the player also completes all races there with the S rank, the mirror mode is activated, which is not only more difficult due to the now mirrored race tracks, the opponents now also drive better.

Challenge

In Challenge mode , various tasks such as driving through gates, destroying opponents or jumping through rings must be mastered in a given time. A certain number of stars must be collected again. If all events have been completed with the S rank, a higher level of difficulty is unlocked.

Versus

In the Versus mode, you can drive against a real opponent in the split screen . As in the other modes, the aim is to collect as many stars as possible and thus emerge victorious.

particularities

As background music, pieces of music from the rock 'n' roll genre will be played during the races to underline the action-packed atmosphere of Excite Truck. However, the game first offers the option of playing MP3 music on the Wii via an SD card . Interestingly enough, the standard music of the title is disproportionately criticized in the professional world and by players and assessed as uninspired electric guitar plucking.

criticism

At the E3 2006 game fair , Excite Truck received a Game Critics Award for best racing game.

In the professional world, the title received very mixed ratings and assessments. Mostly a high level of difficulty, the hectic driving experience and above all an allegedly flat game depth and complexity are criticized. Other voices, however, see the title as a genre-typical action racing game, which, in relation to its non-realistic gameplay, reveals a certain depth of play and learning curve with sufficient activity. However, the underdeveloped multiplayer mode is unanimously criticized.

Relationship to the eponymous franchise

Apart from the genre and roughly comparable route design, Excite Truck shares with the bike series to a certain extent the special importance of gameplay, which is placed on skilful jumping inserts. Not only control in the air is essential, it is also important to prevent a poor landing performance and a poorly chosen landing point (for example in the middle of the ascent of another ramp) from costing valuable time.
