history

Exide Technologies was founded in 1888 by WW Gibbs under the name Electric Storage Battery Company . In the 1990s, Exide Technologies took over a number of well-known European battery manufacturers, for example the French CEAC (Compagnie Européenne d'Accumulateurs) in 1995, which in turn took over the Sonnenschein battery factory in 1991 . Exide integrated the “Sunshine” brand into its product portfolio and made a name for itself with the brand worldwide as a leading company in gel accumulators . Also in 1995, the US company Exide Technologies took over the shares in Hagen Batterie AG from the Spanish Tudor Group. Sunshine and Hagen Battery still exist today as brand names.

On May 19, 2020, Exide Technologies announced that it is conducting a sales process for its North American business and that a Chapter 11 voluntary process has been initiated to facilitate the sale. The EMEA and Asia-Pacific areas are not included as debtors in the North American Chapter 11 filing. In July 2020, Exide sold its North American business to investment firm Atlas Holdings.
