Exile (American band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Exile is an American band that was formed in 1963. The group first played pop rock in the 1970s and had a number one hit on the American Billboard charts in 1978 with the ballad Kiss You All Over . In the 80s she was successful with country rock and was number one on the country singles charts ten times .

Band history

The band was formed in Kentucky in 1963 , initially called The Exiles and only from 1973 onwards Exile. Front man JP Pennington (* 1949) comes from a family with a strong country music tradition; however, Exile started out as a classic rock 'n' roll band.

First successes with pop-rock

In 1976 they achieved a first place at the back of the American Billboard charts with the piece Try It On, composed by British hit writers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman . In mid-1978 her Kiss You All Over, written by the same team, became a top international hit ( USA No. 1, Germany No. 3, Great Britain No. 6). Her two successor tracks, also composed by Chinn / Chapman (including How Could This Go Wrong ), once again reached middle positions in Germany, Great Britain and the USA, after which Exile had almost disappeared from the charts. They lost their record deal and were forced - just like at the beginning of their careers - to tinker through the Kentucky club scene.

Success with country rock

JP Pennington and Sonny LeMaire began to write songs that were picked up by well-known country singers such as Kenny Rogers or Janie Fricke . Exile then approached country music and signed with the Nashville Epic label in 1983 . At the time, the band consisted of JP Pennington, Sonny LeMaire, Les Taylor, Marlon Hargis and Steve Goetzman. In 1983 they were able to place themselves in the American country charts for the first time and had ten number one hits there between 1983 and 1987.

The success came at a time when country music had partly approached commercial pop music . In the mid-1980s a countermovement was initiated by the New Traditionalists of the so-called New Country , and Exile quickly lost ground again. Personnel changes were the result: Marlon Hargis was replaced by Lee Carroll and Les Taylor by Mark Jones. Eventually founder Pennington left the group in 1989 - Paul Martin took his place. In 1990 they switched to the Arista label. There were still some moderately successful hits, then the record company lost interest in further collaboration. In 1995 they got together again to produce an album. In 2013 the band celebrated their 50th stage anniversary with a tour and a live album, and since then the group has only performed sporadically.
