Exobasidium aequatorianum is a fungus - kind of the family of Nacktbasidienverwandten (Exobasidiaceae) from the subdivision Ustilaginomycotina . It lives as an endoparasite on Vaccinium crenatum . Symptoms of the infection by the fungus are greatly enlarged, carmine-red colored leaves of the host plants. The mushroom species is widespread in large parts of Ecuador .

features

Macroscopic features

Exobasidium aequatorianum is initially invisible to the naked eye. Symptoms of the infestation Red colored leaves of infested plants enlarged by 30 to 50% and protruding mycelium on the underside of the leaves .

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Exobasidium aequatorianum , like all naked basidia, grows intercellularly and forms suction threads that grow into the host's storage tissue. The fungus has a monomitic hyphae structure made up of purely generative hyphae 1.2 to 2.3 µm thick. The two-, rarely three-pore, 13–22 × 6.3–7.4  µm large basidia, unseptate and cylindrical to club-shaped. They grow directly from the host epidermis or from stomata . The elliptical spores are hyaline , 12 × 4 µm in size. At first they are unsepted, when ripe they have a septum . Apparently there are no conidia .

distribution

The known distribution area of Exobasidum aequatorianum extends over large parts of Ecuador .

ecology

The host plant of Exobasidium aequatorianum is Vaccinium crenatum . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its basidia later break through the leaf surface and release spores. After they have fallen on a suitable substrate, these germinate in germ tubes, from which new mycelium then develops.
