history
The operators, Achim Kempter and Hardy Köhler, have been dealing with terraristics since 1985 , especially keeping snakes . As more and more species were added and other animal groups such as lizards , insects and arachnids were added to the collection, the idea of making them accessible to the interested public grew up.
On April 28, 2000, the Oberhof Exotarium was opened. Since then, the number of animals as well as the exhibition area has been steadily expanded. On May 1, 2005, a new department with seven aquariums was opened and in August of the same year the Exotarium received the zoo permit according to the new EU directive.
Terrariums
Around 80 different species are kept in 48 terrariums with sizes from 0.5 to 28 m². In addition to numerous snakes such as rattlesnakes , adders and pythons , visitors to the terrarium can also see turtles , frogs , spiders , grasshoppers , cockroaches , bugs , beetles and mice .
The largest of the terrariums was set up for the large reticulated pythons , 25 m² are available for the bandage monitor .
Aquariums
Since May 1, 2005, visitors to the Exotarium have been able to observe numerous fish in a large aquarium. Around 70 different species from different habitats live in seven aquariums.
The Amazon basin is 40 m³ in the largest exotarium and contains about 4,000 fish, including tetras , catfish and tilapia .
In addition, smaller aquariums can be viewed in the Exotarium, which house animals from Europe , Australia and New Guinea , Southeast Asia , Central Africa and Lake Malawi .
