Expedition Everest is a steel roller coaster in Disney's Animal Kingdom ( Florida , USA ). It was built by the Dutch manufacturer Vekoma and opened on April 7, 2006.

background

Expedition Everest during construction

The most striking peculiarity of Expedition Everest is that it was largely built into a specially built artificial mountain - the highest in the entire Walt Disney World Resort . If this mountain were real, it would be the fourth highest peak in Florida at around 60 m above sea level. At the foot of the man-made mountain range and taking up most of the site is the fictional village of Serka Zong, which houses the waiting area and a souvenir shop. Contrary to what the name of the attraction suggests, the mountain is not a replica of Mount Everest , but the fictional "forbidden mountain" guarded by the Yeti . The background story to the train says that the roller coaster offers a fast connection through the Himalayas to the foot of Mount Everest. Mount Everest itself appears on the eastern edge (on the right in the photo) only as a background in an example of applied forced perspective, the small size is intended to simulate distance.

A peculiarity that is less visible from the outside is reversing inside the mountain. For this purpose, two rotating points are installed, which you do not notice because one is behind the train and one changes the direction of travel in the dark. In the storyline, these changes of direction take place through rails destroyed by the Yeti.

useful information

According to Disney, the attraction occupies 2.5 hectares in the Asian-themed area of the park and the mountain itself just 0.4 hectares.

Expedition Everest is often compared to the 1959 Matterhorn Bobsleds roller coaster in Disneyland , which also features a snow-covered mountain as a scenery and a "ghastly snowman" as a figure during the entire journey.

Expedition Everest opened on April 7th, 2006 in a ceremony led by Disney CEO Robert Iger and Theme Park President Jay Rasulo. The attraction was first mentioned in public on April 22, 2003 during an event to celebrate the fifth birthday of Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Due to the construction costs of around USD 100 million  , Expedition Everest was considered the most expensive roller coaster in the world until this record was exceeded by the Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which opened in 2019 at Universal's Islands of Adventure , with construction costs of around USD 300 million.
