content

The novel is about the nine-year-old boy Oskar Schell, who apparently suffers from autism . He describes himself as an inventor and invents things in his own way that appear to be of vital importance to him. He lives with his mother in New York and lost his father in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Oskar tries to process the death of his father and keeps thinking about how his father died, whether he jumped or maybe burned. Out of curiosity, he goes into his father's closet, discovers a blue vase on a shelf and tries to get it down, dropping it from his hand and breaking it. In the middle of the shards is an envelope labeled "Black" with a small key. Firmly convinced that this name has something to do with an alleged message from his father, Oskar decides to look up all people in New York with this name in alphabetical order to find the lock on the key.

Oskar is one of the first to meet 48-year-old Abby Black, and they become friends. Oskar continues to search the city, where towards the end of his search he meets "the tenant" (who is actually Oskar's grandfather). Shortly after they first met, Abby calls him and admits she's been hiding something. Oskar didn't hear the message until eight months later. She refers him to her ex-husband, William Black. Oskar learns from him that the key comes from his father. Oskar tells him about his father's last message during 9/11 and then gives him the key, disappointed that the key has nothing to do with him. Soon after, he discovers that his mother knew about his search and called everyone by the name Black before him so that people would receive him kindly.

Parallel to Oskar's search, the story of Oskar's grandfather and father is told in letters about the Second World War and the love between the grandparents. Further letters from his grandmother to Oskar describe the marriage of his grandparents and Oskar's importance for them.
