history

Crossing the Neuendorf ferry

A ferry connection at the location of today's Neuendorf ferry is said to have existed since around 1900. The ferryman was a certain Albert Voigt, who translated people in a ferry boat . Due to an increasing number of excursions to the Havel and Breitlingsee and increasing motorization, the ferry boats used were soon no longer sufficient. For example, a small car ferry was purchased that was first pulled through the Havel by a diesel engine on a chain and later on a wire rope .

The basic cable ferry, which is still in use, dates from 1941.

Due to a lack of profitability, especially in the years after the reunification, the municipality of Brandenburg completely stopped ferry operations after the 1997 season. However, due to protests and a renewed increase in excursion traffic, the ferry service was resumed after a general overhaul of the ferry in spring 2000 by Brandenburger Dienstleistungen GmbH. The ferry is only operated in the summer months from April to October. Since it reopened, passenger numbers have increased from 5,000 to around 23,000 in the 2012 season. Over 13,000 bicycles were transported. The ferry is currently subsidized by the city with EUR 2,500 per month. Bicycles, strollers and children under 14 can use the connection free of charge. People aged 14 and over pay 50 cents, a motorcycle is charged 80 cents, a car 1.10 euros and a pick-up truck up to 3 tons 2.20 euros. The ferry has a length of 18.25 meters and a width of 5.90 meters. The load capacity is 5,000 kilograms. Twenty people can be transported and the heaviest individual load must not exceed 3,250 kilograms.
