The Breitlingsee is the largest body of water in a lake district in the west of the city of Brandenburg . It has an area of 513 ha. The islands of Kiehnwerder and Buhnenwerder separate the Breitlingsee from the Möserschen See and the Plauer See . At the Buhnenhaus settlement, the Havel , here referred to as the Brandenburger Niederhavel , which flows through the lake district, flows into the lake. Directly south of the Havel the Plane and at the Malge settlement the Buckau flow into the Breitlingsee. Both rivers have their headwaters in the Fläming . Rabbit Island is located north of the Malge settlement . East of the Rabbit Island, the deepest point of the Breitlingsee was measured at 5.60 m.

The Breitlingsee belongs as a federal waterway to the Lower Havel waterway . Over a length of around 9 km, from the mouth of the Brandenburg Niederhavel to the Möserschen See, it is a class III waterway . The Brandenburg Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .

The Brandenburg – Magdeburg railway line runs along the south bank of the lake . Behind it is a large forest and heather area, a popular recreational area. The place Malge on the south bank of the lake is a destination and a water sports base.

The island of Kiehnwerder is a protected landscape area and there is a campsite on it . The island of Buhnenwerder is part of the Buhnenwerder-Wusterau nature reserve .
