The Association Internationale de Boxe ( AIBA ; English International Boxing Association ) is the world association of Olympic boxing with its headquarters in Lausanne ( Switzerland ). The association is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a representative of the sport of boxing and organized u. a. the biennial amateur boxing world championships for men and women in the various age and weight classes and the boxing tournament as part of the Summer Olympics, including the necessary qualifying competitions. The AIBA also determines the internationally applicable rules of Olympic boxing and trains referees for international competitions.

The original word “amateur” was deliberately deleted from the name in order to underline the association's extended claim to representation, which no longer wanted to limit itself to pure amateur boxing. Under the presidency of the Korean Chin-Kuo Wu, the AIBA set itself the goal of representing boxing at all levels and in all its forms under its roof (“To Govern the Sport of Boxing Worldwide in all its Forms”).

In addition to the continuation of Olympic boxing, this goal included the establishment of a dedicated professional department called AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) and the introduction of the international boxing league World Series of Boxing (WSB) in 2010 , in which national teams from around the world now number ten Compete against each other in weight classes. The WSB, which has joined almost 200 federations, brings together the best Olympic boxers who represent their respective countries.

With the establishment of a professional department under the umbrella of the AIBA recognized by the International Olympic Committee, professional boxers as well as amateurs would have had access to the Olympic Games. However, after a few years, AIBA practically stopped its professional boxing activities and finally officially gave up the professional department in 2019. The attempt to introduce professional boxing under the leadership of the association is also held responsible for the association's temporary over-indebtedness. The World Series of Boxing (WSB), however, is still being held.

history

The association was founded in 1946 as the successor organization to the Fédération Internationale de Boxe Amateur (FIBA) founded in 1920 . The first president was the French Emile Grémaux. 196 national associations and 5 continental associations have joined the world association. This also includes the German Boxing Association DBV .

In 2006, the controversial 83-year-old Pakistani Anwar Chowdhry was ousted after 20 years of presidency. His successor, the Taiwanese Chin-Kuo Wu , resigned in 2017. In December 2018, his deputy and interim president, the Uzbek Gafur Rakhimov , was elected president. Rahimov has been on a US Treasury Department sanctions list since 2012 as an alleged key member of the Brothers' Circle criminal organization , the existence of which is controversial; Rahimov has never been found to have committed a crime. In March 2019, Rahimov resigned from his position after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) increasingly criticized AIBA for its overindebtedness, the referee services at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the presidency of Rahimov. The Moroccan Mohamed Moustahsane has headed the boxing association as the new interim president since April 2019.

Despite the temporary change at the top of the association, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided in May 2019, after a lengthy conflict with the AIBA, to suspend the association from hosting the Olympic boxing tournament at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. In the view of the IOC, the reason for this was insufficient reform efforts by the association. However, the IOC indicated the possibility of accepting AIBA back into the circle of Olympic sports associations after the Olympic Games in Tokyo, if substantial changes were implemented.
