The Fédération Québécoise de la Montagne et de l'Escalade (FQME; German  Mountaineering Association of Québec ), founded on January 23, 1969, is a non-profit organization. It promotes climbing both indoors and in the mountains of Québec on rock and ice as well as skiing. Since 2009, it has organized the Coupe Québec, which consists of local events and a national championship, as a climbing competition . She supports the training of climbers and has been a UIAA member since 1975 .

Climb

The FQME understands climbing to be a discipline that enables you to reach the top of a rock, a mountain or a route with your bare hands. This can be done on rocks, on icy waterfalls or on artificial structures. The FQME differentiates between bouldering , which it does up to a maximum of three meters in height, free climbing , climbing with the help of existing anchors and climbing on ice-covered walls or frozen waterfalls. The FQME looks after 71 climbing areas in the entire province of Québec . There are a total of 20 climbing halls for indoor climbing , 15 of which are operated by FQME.

The FQME, in cooperation with the Ministry for the Management of National Parks and Forestry ( French: Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs ) also issues access restrictions to protect peregrine falcons breeding in the climbing rocks .

As part of the training program for climbers ( French: Program québécois de formation en escalade ), the FQME coordinates training in the field of climbing and mountaineering so that it takes place uniformly throughout the province of Québec, and issues a certificate after successful training. For this she receives financial support from the provincial government as a national leisure organization ( French Organizme National de Loisir ). The FQME awards a seal of quality to suitable mountaineering schools (currently 31).

To ski

FQME defines skiing as downhill sports ( alpine skiing , telemarking , mountain ski tours, snowboarding or teleboarding). The ascent takes place without the support of lifts, for example with the help of ski skins . The FQME supports the expansion and maintenance of eleven ski areas through logistical, material or financial aid. In doing so, she ensures that sustainable and ecological forest management is still possible in these areas.

Coupe Québec

Since 2009, the FQME has organized the Coupe Québec every year as a provincial championship in bouldering , speed climbing and according to the difficulty of the chosen route for all climbers under 60 years of age. Participants must be members of the FQME.

Structure of the FQME

The FQME consists of eleven regional sections that organize the practical events and activities for the members of the FQME in their respective geographic area. In order to become a member of such a section, one must first become a member of the FQME.
