history

The Fédération Républicaine was founded in November 1903 as a moderate-right, republican party. Its members rejected the coalition of Parti républicain (Republican Party, liberal radical ) and the Bloc des Gauches (Left Bloc) led by Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau . Some of them were frustrated with the course of the Dreyfus affair and also refused to pardon the Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus . Ideological role models included Félix Jules Méline , Alexandre Ribot , Jean Casimir-Perier and Charles Dupuy . They represented the interests of the upper classes and the economy and were therefore opposed to social reforms. In addition, they were in favor of decentralization . The members were usually members of the upper class. In 1926 the party had 30,000 members, in 1939 there were 18,000.

In the elections in 1919, the party entered the National Bloc list . In the same year the faction joined forces with that of the Catholic Action Liberale party . The group was named Entente républicaine démocratique . Due to the influence of anti-parliamentary groups and changes at the management level, the party oriented itself further and further to the right. In the period that followed, however, the members were given more opportunities to participate, and youth organizations were set up. When the party formed a center coalition with the Alliance démocratique, a large number of its members called for a union with all right-wing parties. This happened when the left parties formed the popular front . After the shift to the right, many important members left the party.

Although few members actively participated in the Vichy regime , it was accepted by a large part. Nevertheless, the party belonged to the Conseil national de la Résistance . Due to its indifferent attitude during the war, the party was unable to re-establish itself after the liberation in 1944. The successor party is the Center national des indépendants et paysans .
