Felix del Rosario

Félix del Rosario (born June 12, 1934 in San Francisco de Macorís , † October 26, 2012 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican musician (saxophone), composer and orchestra conductor.

Del Rosario began his musical studies at the age of 15 at the music school in his native city. Very early on he moved to Santo Domingo, then Trujillo, and there became a member of the Kriegsmarine band, where he made it up to officer. Since then he has been interested in jazz music ; In 1953 he was co-founder of Antonio Morel's orchestra . A little later he worked with Amado Vásquez , Agustín Mercier and Rafael Solano .

In 1964 he founded his band "Félix del Rosario y Sus Magos del Ritmo". This group shaped popular music in the Dominican Republic for more than 20 years . Members of the orchestra were u. a. Antonio Peña, Papito Bazán, Quico Marcano and Manuel Perdomo as well as the singers Frank Cruz and El Negrito Macabí . He later founded the Santo Domingo All Stars and the Grupo Félix .

His merengues took a prominent place in the repertoire of Dominican folk music, with themes such as Papá Bocó , composed by Manuel Sánchez Acosa, as well as Víctor y Memelo, Mal Pelao, La Caperucita and El Secuestro . He also composed themes approaching Afro-Cuban jazz, such as Carmen , a fusion of quaracha and Latin American jazz.

He received various awards such as the "Honored Son" of his hometown in 1973 and the Duarte Sánchez and Mella Order of Merit in 1995 . He died of a heart attack on October 26, 2012 at the age of 78 .
