Antonio Morel

Antonio Morel (born December 20, 1920 in Moca ; † May 2006 ) was a Dominican merengue musician and composer.

Morel studied at the Academia de Música de Tamboril with Federico Camejo and attended composition classes with Enrique Casal Chapí . In 1947 he founded the Orquesta Antillana , the most important entertainment orchestra in the Dominican Republic alongside the Super Orquesta San José . It was directed by the pianist and composer Enriquillo Sánchez . The first singer in the orchestra was Luis Vásquez . Singers and artists such as Francis Santana , Joseíto Mateo , the dancer Lupe Serrano , the group Flor-de-Lis , Alberto Beltrán , Tony Echavarría , Rafael Martínez , Lope Balaguer , Macabí , Julito Deschamps , Niní Cáffaro and Vinicio Franco also performed with the orchestra . Morel took with the orchestra a. a. the Merengues Apágame la vela , San Cristóbal , Masá Masá and Fiesta en la joya , the Boleros Mi gloria , Demasiado corazón , Arenas del desierto , Tu palabra y la mía and No me abandones as well as Mambos, Guarachas and Sones.

Morel was also one of the founding members of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional , which he conducted at a concert with his own compositions in 1959. He played the bass clarinet and performed as a singer with guitarist Juan Lockward .
