Lope Balaguer

José Manuel López "Lope" Balaguer (born August 22, 1925 in Santiago de los Caballeros ; † January 29, 2015 ) was a Dominican singer.

Lope Balaguer made his radio debut as a singer in 1940. In 1944 he appeared for the first time on the broadcaster La Voz del Yuna in Bonao with the Orquesta San José , with whom he made his debut in the following year under the direction of the Cuban composer and pianist Julio Gutiérrez in the Café Ariete in Santo Domingo. The Revista HILL voted him the best singer in the country and gave him the name El tenor de la juventud . In the same year he traveled to Cuba, where he appeared in nightclubs in Havana and on the radio and took the stage name Lope Balaguer .

In Puerto Rico he enjoyed success at El Escambrón , and in 1946 the Salón Fígaro magazine in Santo Domingo voted him the best singer of the year alongside Manuel Hernández . In 1947 he received a contract with the broadcaster La Voz del Yuna (from 1949 La Voz Dominicana ). He went on concert tours to Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panamá, Haití, Guadalupe, Martinique and the USA.

Lope Balaguer made his first recordings in 1946 with Luis Benjamín in Puerto Rico. With the Orchestra of Antonio Morel he recorded a record of Dominican songs. He was successful with songs such as Nunca te lo he dicho by Papa Molina , Ni pie ni pisá by Luis Kalaff , Arenas del desierto by Héctor Incháustegui Cabral and Rafael Colón , Sígueme by Manuel Troncoso , Entonces me casaré por ti by Rafael Solano , Un día inolvidable by Pedro Vilar and De carne o hierro by Fernando Arias Cabello . He recorded a total of 28 long-playing records, 5 CDs and, more recently, several audio CDs.
