Friends of Girassol

The Friends of Girassol e. V. is a non-profit German organization that supports children and young people from poor families in poor settlements ( favelas ) in Brazil . “Girassol” means “sunflower” in Portuguese.

The association is financed by private donors and institutions such as B. " Sternstunden e. V. ”,“ A Heart for Children ”or Bayer AG . Most of the donations come from Germany, often from German companies based in Brazil. The work of the association members is voluntary.

In Brazil, the local sponsoring association is called Socieadade Beneficiente Alemã , which was founded in the 19th century by German immigrants under the name “German Aid Association”.

The aim of the association is to enable children and young people from difficult social backgrounds in Brazil a better future.

Every year several hundred children and young people receive daycare or school-based vocational training in electrics, tailoring, administration, hairdressing and beauty care, the bakery and as a care assistant. All trainees are also offered classes in IT, English and entrepreneurship. The daycare and training places are free of charge.

history

The Girassol aid project was founded in 1992. One of the founders was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1999 for her commitment.

In 2003, the Girassol-Pro training center was set up for more than 400 young people, financed by donations from the Bavarian radio television program “Sternstunden”.

In 2015, an all-day daycare center Girassol-Kids was inaugurated.
