FBReader is a free e-book viewer program. It was originally developed for Zaurus Organizers and now also runs on numerous other mobile hardware platforms ( PDAs , cell phones, PlayStation Portable , Nokia Internet Tablets ) and on desktop systems (GNU / Linux , Windows , Mac OS X , BSD ). With FBReaderJ there is a Java porting that can also run on Android systems. It can represent bidirectional text . Books can be imported directly from (compressed) archive files (tar , zip , gzip , bzip2 ) and can also be obtained directly from the program from various Internet sources. The app is available in parallel in the Google Playstore and in F-Droid .

The name of the application is derived from the FictionBook file format, which is very popular in Russian-speaking countries .

In January 2005 the first (Zaurus) version was published. A Maemo porting for Nokia 770 devices was released in December . FBReader was added to Debian in late June 2007 . A preview version of a Java port (FBReaderJ) was also released on April 13, 2008 . The FBReaderJ is now called "FBReader for Android". For Android, a free and a paid version with slightly expanded functionality are now available on Google Play, including: a. no advertising in the bookshelf plugin.
