The M4 series are narrow-gauge diesel multiple units of the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL) and Ferrovie della Calabria (FC) in southern Italy , manufactured by Fiat and Ferrosud . For use on the Catanzaro Città – Catanzaro Lido section, the FC sub- series M4c is equipped with a gear drive .
history
In the 1980s, Ferrovie Calabro Lucane (FCL) had Fiat develop the M4 series, derived from the FS's standard gauge ALn 663 , to support or replace the now outdated M2 railcars . The railcars are driven by two 6-cylinder Iveco engines via a 5-speed gearbox with hydraulic clutch. With a multiple control , two units can travel together. A second driver is required for triple and quadruple traction. As early as 1983 Ferrosud supplied matching sidecars RA 4001–4015.
In 1987 Fiat delivered the first part series M4.300, which was assigned to the Bari depot and came to the FAL in 1991 when the FCL was split up. In 1991/92, the FC received the two rack-and-pinion rail cars M4c.351 and 352, and the remaining eight rack-and-pinion cars followed between the end of 1996 and the first few months of 1997. Delivery of the M4.400 adhesion multiple units to FC also began in 1997. From 1999 onwards, the M4.350 double multiple units finally came to the FAL.
