The MZ 102 multi-purpose work vehicle is an auxiliary vehicle that was built between 1974 and 1991 in a total of around 150 by the Blankenburg research and development plant for the German State Railroad (DR) in the GDR . A distinction is made between four different versions.

Carrier vehicle MZ 102

The multi-purpose vehicle MZ 102 is the basis for the other variants, which differ in terms of their bodies, but also in terms of different frame lengths and wheelbases.

A diesel engine is installed for long-distance travel, which uses a mechanical transmission to move the vehicle at a maximum speed of 80 km / h. Work trips in the low speed range are carried out using a hydraulic drive . Both axles are equipped with disc brakes , so they can also be used on slopes greater than 25 ‰. The driver's cab is designed to be narrower than the frame in order to enable the transport of narrow, long objects such as rails .

The multi-purpose track work vehicle MZA consists of the carrier vehicle MZ 102, on which a work platform and a measuring pantograph for overhead line work were built. The area behind and next to the driver's cab is surrounded by a grille all around, and access to the work platform is via a ladder from this area. The platform can be lifted and swiveled and can carry a payload of 400 kg, a maximum of four people can be transported with it.

The MZA delivered over 50 vehicles to the DR, many of which have meanwhile been sold to private railway and track construction companies.

The version of the MZ 102 as a Rottenkraftwagen is known as an MZG. A loading platform with a load capacity of five tons, which can be tilted on both sides, is built behind the driver's cab, the side walls of which are foldable and can be replaced by insertions. At the rear there is a hydraulic loading crane, the lifting height of which is limited to 4.5 m by a mechanical lock, so that work can also be carried out when the overhead line is switched on. Various grabs and other lifting tools can be used as accessories for the crane; the arrangement at the rear also enables a trailer to be loaded or unloaded.

The MZG also used over 50 vehicles at the DR, several of which also found their way to private and museum railways.

Multi-spindle screwdriver MZS

The multi-spindle screwdriver is a further version of the MZ 102 that differs significantly from the other variants. There is no loading area or work platform behind the driver's cab, but the frame is made particularly narrow and hydraulic screwing machines are attached to both sides to loosen or fasten the connection between rails and sleepers in the K and W superstructures . There are six screwdriving machines on each side, behind them the workstation for the screwdriver operator at right angles to the direction of travel. At the rear (above the second axle) is the hydraulic oil tank with the electrically operated control slide for the screwing device.

MZZ towing vehicle

The MZZ towing vehicle was created in 1995 by converting an MZG and served as a locomotive for the GMF 31 track measuring vehicle. For this purpose, the loading platform and crane that were no longer required were dismantled and replaced with concrete ballast weights , which increased the vehicle's weight from 11.2 to 12 , 1 tons rose. After the investigation period had expired and the GMF was sold, the vehicle was parked for scrapping.
