The FH KUNST Arnstadt was a private university with state recognition in Thuringia with recently around 100 students. With the decision of the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture on May 2, 2012, it was renamed "Fachhochschule Arnstadt-Balingen" and received a presidential constitution . On the basis of this decision, she had the right to operate a legally dependent branch in Balingen ( Zollernalbkreis , Baden-Württemberg ).

The approval of this branch office (which, however, was never validly operated according to university law standards, although according to the university's insolvency files, students were studying there from the winter semester 2011/12) was based on a cooperation agreement between the university and the Plettenbergschule Balingen from 2012, but neither did the university nor the cooperation partner has the necessary funds. Several professor appointment procedures were even carried out for the branch office, but the appropriate recruitment did not take place after the calls were issued.

After years of financial problems, teaching was stopped on March 1, 2013 and insolvency proceedings were opened.
