The FK Šumadija (full official name in Serbian : Фудбалски клуб Шумадија, Fudbalski klub Šumadija ) is a Serbian football club from the city of Kragujevac . The club, which was founded in 1903 by Danilo Stojanović , one of the most famous pioneers of Serbian football, is one of the three oldest football clubs in Serbia , along with BASK and FK Bačka in 1901 . In its more than 110-year history, FK Šumadija - unlike most of today's higher-class clubs - has never changed its name.

history

Foundation of an association

When the club was founded on September 14, 1903 on the initiative of the then 24-year-old Danilo Stojanović under his current name in Kragujevac, the team was only the second football club in the Kingdom of Serbia alongside SK Soko , now FK BASK . Thus, he is one of the pioneering teams of football, which was still relatively little widespread in Serbia at that time . As a student in Mittweida, he learned to play football in what was then the German Empire at a Polish club called "Wisła".

Stojanović was so enthusiastic about football that it was already clear to him that he would also introduce the new sport in his home country. He also brought the first soccer balls from Germany to Kragujevac. After his return he first worked as a teacher at a school. There he also taught the students to play football. Stojanović was player-coach and first elected club president of the club and suggested his name. The name Šumadija stands for a heavily forested region, hence the name of the association, as "Šuma" means in the Serbian forest . The city of Kragujevac is still considered the center of this region today.

First encounters

After FK Šumadija had previously played its games on the municipal playground "Vašarište", on May 6, 1904, Serbia's first football pitch was opened in Kragujevac with the club's first official game. The opening game took place between two teams of the club on Đurđevdan , in memory of the first Serbian uprising against the Ottoman occupation one hundred years ago, and ended with a 1-0 victory for the A-team. The first official SK Soko game took place independently on the same day in Belgrade.

The following Whit Monday , the first meeting between the two teams took place in Belgrade , which FK Šumadija lost 9-0. This game was the first official meeting between two Serbian football clubs, which the Crown Prince Đorđe Karađorđević also followed. The second leg in Kragujevac took place in September of the same year and ended in a 5-1 defeat for hosts FK Šumadija.

Danilo Stojanović was to stay for three years, then he moved to Belgrade in 1906, where he played for SK Soko. At the same time, Sevan Stevanović, son of a wealthy canning factory owner and founding member of SK Soko, moved to FK Šumadija. He took over the management of the club for a total of four decades. The first victory was won in Aleksinac in 1907 against FK Deligrad, which they defeated 5-0 in a friendly. In the same year they also played against FK Bačka 1901 in Subotica.

Subotica was then still under Austro-Hungarian administration, which did not allow all players of FK Šumadija to enter, Sevan Stevanović was also affected. So you started with only eight players and lost with 1: 5. The consolation goal came in the second half when FK Bačka made three of their players available to the guests. The revenge took place in Belgrade that same year. The match was held on the field of Srpski mač . This club was founded in 1905 as the football division of a fencing club and became an independent football club in 1906. They also lost the second game, this time with 1: 3.

Further development

In the following years, FK Šumadija developed into one of the leading clubs in the country. When the National Olympic Committee in Belgrade organized the country's first tournament, the club reached the final. It was played on May 11th in "Košutnjak" on the field of the BSK , which SK Velika Srbija won 3-1. After the First World War, FK Šumadija could no longer build on the old development and from then on played mainly in the lower leagues of the country.
