Lists on the subject

The FN Browning Model 1900 was an early pocket pistol. It was the first weapon that John Moses Browning designed for the Belgian company Fabrique Nationale Herstal .

technology

In 1897, FN secured the right to manufacture and market Browning firearms in Europe. This self-loading pistol was the first in a long line of innovative designs, and it is often referred to as Browning No.1 . Along with this model, Browning introduced the .32 ACP, a new pistol cartridge that is still in production today.

The recoil spring is located above the barrel, so the barrel is low, close to the center of gravity of the weapon. This means that it has a second shot or German nut properties, even if the " single action " trigger is quite hard. In order to use as few parts as possible, the recoil spring causes both the return of the slide and the rapid advance of the firing pin . The gun is cockless and has a firing pin lock. Thus, it can only be tensioned by means of loading, in that the firing pin is caught and held in its rear position by a pawl. Pressing the trigger causes the catch to be swiveled away and the firing pin is released, which then snaps forward onto the primer under spring pressure. As long as the rifle is not cocked, a piece of metal slides clearly visible into the gap in the rear sight and covers the front sight. Browning describes the weapon in the patent as GAS OPERATED FIREARM .

Patent drawing 1899 for Browning Mod. 1900

Gerhard Bock wrote about the FN-Browning 1900 in his book Modern Handguns , edition 1911: “This pistol was the first really usable pocket pistol, and like the oldest Colt revolver it gave impetus to a lot of imitations, of which only a few proved to be really useful ”. He wrote the following about the function: “It has been established photographically that the bolt of the 7.65 caliber Browning pistol has only receded 1.8 mm when the bullet leaves the muzzle. Since the cylindrical sleeve seals (lid) along its entire length, gas escapes cannot occur during this short backward movement ”.

The production was stopped in 1911, by then FN had produced around one million pieces. Both the army and the Belgian police introduced the weapon. Other armed forces also introduced the weapon, but it was not given official status as revolvers were still considered the more reliable weapons. Many weapons were also sold to government agencies and private customers from around the world. The successor was the FN Browning Model 1910 and the slightly larger FN 1922.
