Lists on the subject

The FN CAL (Carabine Automatique Légère) is a Belgian assault rifle manufactured by Fabrique Nationale Herstal (FN).

history

In 1967, the FN became the first European manufacturer to work on rifles in the 5.56 × 45 mm NATO caliber . The weapon should be set up for both the US M 193 cartridge and the Belgian SS 92 cartridge. Produced from 1970, the rifle was tested for several years and only introduced from 1974.

In 1975 production was stopped again because it was not competitive on the international market. Indeed, shortcomings emerged. The rifle had a short lifespan and people were dissatisfied with its reliability in combat, handling, operation and cleaning. This led to the development of the FN FNC . Nevertheless, the weapon is still used in some armed forces.

technology

This rifle is a gas pressure loader with a rotating head lock . The gas tube runs over the barrel and is covered by a multi-part fore-end that has several cooling slots. There is a flash hider on the barrel and, just like on the butt, an attachment for a shoulder strap.

The rifle shoots single fire , bursts of three shots or continuous fire . The CAL is available with a fixed metal piston or a foldable metal shoulder support made of tube.

A telescopic sight , night vision device , bayonet or 40 mm grenade launcher can be mounted on the rifle . The rod magazine holds 20 or 30 cartridges.

The rear sight can be adjusted to distances of up to 400 m.
