The FS 740 series was delivered to Ferrovie dello Stato by several manufacturers . The steam locomotives of the 740 group were a further development of the 730 series ; they were built by Rete Adriatica for route service in the Apennines in central Italy .

history

In the 20th century, various manufacturers from home and abroad (Henschel, Breda and Ansaldo) delivered powerful passenger locomotives to the FS. They were later named as the 740 series. They were developed in 1905 a few years before the nationalization of the railway in Italy.

The result of the development work was so excellent that the 740 series could soon be found all over Italy. To this day, examples of this series have survived in various museums.

technology

It has a Walschaerts control and its boiler can store the steam at a pressure of 12 bar. The 65 km / h were completely sufficient for the performance required at the time. To achieve the desired result, simple changes were made to the whole system, such as the hot steam cylinder. These modifications improved the pulling force so that they could e.g. B. could pull 500 tons more at 45 km / h.

The locomotive was equipped with an automatic brake based on the Westinghouse system.
