The railcars of the series E.10 and E.60 of the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato were electric railcars that were used on the Ferrovie Varesine electrified with busbars .

history

In the 1930s, the FS decided to replace the rolling stock of the Ferrovie Varesine electrified with busbars . The outdated cars of the series E.10 I , E.15 and E.20 were therefore taken out of service and replaced by the larger and more modern E.10 II and E.60.

The new cars were delivered in 1932 by Officine Meccaniche , with electrical equipment from Compagnia Generale di Elettricità . The complete designation was EAiz 100 to 107 and EACiz 600 to 615, for the units equipped with first class or with first and third class.

The E.10 and E.60 were the first modern series of electric multiple units in Italy. Shortly thereafter, a structurally identical variant was developed, the E.624 , which was designed for the lines electrified with overhead lines (especially the “metropolitana” of Naples ).

The E.10 and E.60 remained in operation until 1951, when the Ferrovie Varesine received the usual 3 kV overhead line electrification of the FS; the power rail motor coaches got a pantograph and were classified in the new E.623 series.
