The RALn 60 of the Italian State Railways (FS) was a series of combustion railcars that were used on the Sicilian narrow-gauge railways .

history

The RALn 60 were built by Fiat in 1949-50 to replace the steam traction. They were used on the most frequented lines of the Sicilian narrow-gauge network, ie Castelvetrano-Agrigento , Castelvetrano-Burgio with the branch line from Santa Ninfa to Salemi , Dittaino-Caltagirone and Palermo-Corleone-San Carlo , where they made faster connections possible.

The average speed on the outdated routes remained too low to compete with road traffic. The routes were discontinued and the traffic was taken over by bus lines. After the Dittaino – Caltagirone line was closed in 1971, five railcars were sold to Ferrovia Circumetnea , which they converted into RALn 64 in the 1980s . After the Castelvetrano – Ribera line was closed in 1985, the remaining vehicles were scrapped. Only RALn 60.12 remained, which is a memorial at the Villarosa train station .

technology

The RALn 60 box was based on the standard gauge ALn 772 . Completely new were the chassis and, above all, the Fiat 700 drive , which was later installed on other traction vehicles ( ALn 64 rack- and -pinion cars and the 218 small locomotives ).

The units 01–15 were equipped with two drives, the 16–25 with only one. The axis formula was therefore B'B 'or B'2.

Painting

The RALn 60 were in the usual time for the FS Auburn - Isabel ( " Castano-Isabella painted").

In addition to the railcars, five trailer cars with two driver's cabs were delivered. Since they had 68 seats, they were given the numbers RLn 68.01-05.

1960–62 they were converted into baggage cars. Since they only had 32 seats, they were given the new numbering RDLn 32.01–05.
