ALn 772 of the FS in Milano Smistamento

The ALn 772s of the Italian State Railways (FS) were combustion railcars that were the most important class of the second generation of railcars in the 1940s and 1950s.

history

At the end of the 1930s, the Officine Meccaniche (OM) company designed a new model of diesel-powered internal combustion engine , which was classified as ALn 772. Compared to the older series of railcars from the 1930s, the ALn 772s were seen as larger and more comfortable thanks to the new OM-Saurer drive.

The first copies were delivered 1940–41 by Fiat (ALn 772.1001–1100) and 1940–43 by OM itself (ALn 772.3201–3296), but were not put into operation until after 1945 because of the Second World War .

1948-49 OM delivered another series of 40 copies (ALn 772.3301-3241) and again the last one in 1955-57 (ALn 772.3342-3423).

The ALn 772s were used throughout Italy and in every train category. The express trains on Sardinia and Sicily were remarkable .

The ALn 772 were retired between 1981 and 1986. Their last use was the local trains on the Novara – Varallo route .

Panorama railcar ALTn 444

The ALn 772.3240, built in 1940 and badly damaged in the Second World War, was converted into a panorama railcar in 1948 and was therefore given the new company number ALtn 444.3001 and the nickname “ Belvedere ”. It was used in seasonal traffic from Milan to Sanremo , but was dismantled as ALn 772 as early as 1965.

The ALn 772 for licensed railways

ALn 772 of the Ferrovie Padane

The licensed railway company Ferrovie Padane , operator of the Ferrara – Codigoro railway line , received two copies in 1941, which were classified as ALn 72.1004-1005.

The Società Imprese Ferroviarie , operator of the Siena – Monte Antico railway line , received two ALn 772s with a sidecar in 1950 ; After the nationalization of the line in 1956, these came to the FS, which were classified as ALn 772.3297-3299 after the motorization of the sidecar.

The ALn 772 for foreign railways

After the Second World War, the Yugoslavian JDŽ received three FS units, two of which were converted into double railcars.

In 1949 three railcars were built for the Polish PKP , numbered as SD80 and used in express service.

Received vehicles

Four copies have been preserved, the only operable one is the ALn 772.3265, which is used for the " Trenonatura " in the area around Siena .

Ferrovie Padane's two ALn 72s still exist, but are no longer in operation.
