The Force unifiée pour la libération des races opprimées ( FULRO ) was 1,964 of Y-Bhum as a resistance organization of about 30 mountain peoples of Vietnam , Cambodia and Laos established highlands. She first appeared on September 20, 1964 against South Vietnamese soldiers and settlers who were advancing into the highlands.

history

The FULRO fought for the autonomy or independence of the approx. 30 mountain tribes (the "Dega") in the Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian highlands. Since the withdrawal of the French, their guerrilla activities have been directed almost exclusively against the Vietnamese settlers and soldiers invading the highlands. FULRO supported the US troops against the Viet Cong during the Second Indochina War . In return, the FULRO guerrilla movement was trained and equipped by soldiers of the Special Forces and, often led by only one or two Green Berets, carried out guerrilla actions against the Viet Cong, with large areas around the respective Special Forces Camp being regarded as almost enemy-free were able to, which is still reflected today in the fact that many former members of the Special Forces still speak highly of their former allies. The FULRO was also given the prospect of autonomy after the end of the Indochina War . After the US withdrew from Indochina, however, FULRO was left to fend for itself. Between the beginning of 1976 and the end of 1978 , bloody political "cleansing" took place in the FULRO leadership, the background of which was presumably rivalries between the various ethnic groups and which weakened FULRO considerably in the following years. In 1979 FULRO moved its headquarters to the impassable jungle area on the other side of the Cambodian border. But after many Special Forces soldiers who had lived and fought with the Montagnards in the war were so ashamed of leaving their ally behind, after 1975 many aid organizations were set up in the USA with the aim of giving the Montagnards a new life enable.

Since 1991 Hanoi tried to improve the standard of living of the highland residents and to integrate them into the social system. In the course of the pacification of the Cambodia conflict, the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) took on the FULRO, as they viewed them as foreign armed forces on Cambodian territory and therefore had to disarm. At the beginning of October 1992 the last FULRO fighters were flown out to Phnom Penh by UNTAC. It is questionable whether there are still scattered FULRO guerrillas in the highlands and whether they can still bring enough men and firepower into the field to continue the fight.

No exact figures are available about the victims of the war. By 1975, 250,000 of the three million Montagnards are said to have died. Subsequently, by 1979, the FULRO lost 8,000 of its 10,000 fighters to death or arrest.
