FVWM ( FV irtual W indow M anager ) is a free , ICCCM -compliant and modular window manager for the X Window System .

The main features of FVWM are the extensive and varied configurability of the window manager via configuration files and the use of virtual workstations. Many current window managers are related to FVWM, including AfterStep , Xfce, and Enlightenment .

history

Robert Nation decided in July 1993 to take a closer look at the then ubiquitous Twm , as TWM limited him too much in the analysis of acoustic signatures for the United States Department of Defense .

Among other things, he found out why the TWM took up so much memory and how to create and implement so-called virtual work surfaces.

At that time already known for his terminal emulator rxvt , Rob Nation worked on reducing the memory consumption of his new window manager. Curious about the reaction of the community, he combined the FVWM with a new rxvt release. As many users were tired of the inconvenience and limitations of the TWM, a sensible alternative was just what they needed.

In 1994 Nation left the project; he named Charles Hines in charge. Nation's last release was fvwm-1.24r. Due to the complete redesign of the architecture after Nations departure and the resulting incompatibilities between the configuration files of the old and new generations, many Linux distributions offer both generations of the FVWM in parallel. Since (in 2005) fvwm-1.24r can still compile and run on modern Linux systems without any problems, there are still a small number of users using this older FVWM release.

Surname

At the moment, the developers of FVWM do not assign a clear meaning to the F in the abbreviation FVWM. In old archived Usenet posts, FVWM is called Feeble Virtual Window Manager (English for weak or timid virtual window manager ). In a source text comment of FVWM version 0.5, FVWM is also referred to as Feeble Virtual Manager .
