Facebook Watch is a video-on-demand service from Facebook that was launched on August 9, 2017. The service is available on mobile devices, computers and in Facebook's TV apps .

Features and offer

On the Watch page, episodes of individual shows are displayed. These can take place live as well as recorded.

The offer includes, for example, sports clips, vlogs , cooking and comedy shows as well as documentaries . Since the videos can also be accessed on the go and the recording time of web videos is often very short, they are usually kept short.

The users should be addressed through exclusive content (for example from the National Geographic Channel , National Basketball Association , Major League Baseball or NASA ). But private individuals can also publish content on the site. The newsfeed and individual playlists such as "Most Discussed", "What Friends Are Watching" or "What Makes People Laugh" adapt to their own preferences and Facebook users.

Facebook is thus aiming for a mixture of streaming services and television, as well as YouTube and Twitter .

Party function

Facebook Watch Parties should offer the opportunity to watch videos together. To do this, the user creates a group and specifies administrators and moderators. These then determine what the others are watching and can choose between live and recorded videos. The group responds to this with comments and ratings.

Funding and Revenue

Some shows are financed by Facebook itself, but the video producers receive 55 percent of the revenue for the other videos. Using the comment and discussion function should also generate additional advertising income and length of stay. Advertising methods should be midrolls (advertising during the video) and pre-rolls (advertising before a video). Influencer marketing should also be an important strategy .

Morgan Stanley estimates the platform's sales potential at $ 565 million by the end of 2018 and the Jefferies Group at $ 12 billion by 2022.

history

The service was first activated on August 9, 2017 for selected users in the United States . At the end of the month, the offer was available to all users in the United States.
