The Facel Vega Facel II (type HK2 ) is a luxurious GT - sports car , which the French automobile manufacturers Facel SA 1961 built to 1964th

The car was the successor to the HK 500 Coupé and was viewed by the international trade press as the most beautiful post-war car in France and the fastest, four-seater coupé in the world.

It was presented at the Mondial de l'Automobile de Paris in October 1961 and viewed with great enthusiasm. The visitors compared it with the creations of the best Italian designers. Its elegance is largely based on its lowered roof, which gives the Facel II a low and rapid silhouette. It was produced from December 1961.

design

The design of the Facel II was basically based on its predecessor models. However, it no longer had a panoramic window, and the front section had profiled headlights from Marchal-Mégalux .

technology

The V8 engine of a Facel II (1962)

The carriage is provided with a Chrysler - V8 engine equipped with 6286 cm displacement, developed in conjunction with a manual transmission 390 hp (287 kW) and to the automatic transmission 355 hp (261 kW).

The performance was exceptional at the time; the car equipped with the Chrysler TorqueFlite automatic transmission achieved a top speed of 225 km / h, the one equipped with the manual gearbox from Société Pont-à-Mousson a top speed of 245 km / h. Towards the end of the production period, some examples received the larger Chrysler V8 engine with 6768 cm³ displacement and an output of over 400 hp (294 kW).

The wheels were individually suspended at the front on double wishbones, and at the rear there was a rigid axle on leaf springs. The brake system was Dunlop - disc brakes on all four wheels (308 mm diameter front and 295 mm diameter rear) and a brake booster . On request there was also a power steering as in the Excellence , tinted windows and air conditioning , as well as the radio PO-OM-GO-FM with an electrically operated telescopic antenna.

Production and known owner

The car was very expensive at the time and 184 copies were made by the end of production in 1964 (see also Facel III and Facel 6 ). The French luxury tax had to be paid for the Facel II as well as for the products of the French luxury brands Bugatti and Delahaye . This was a major disadvantage compared to foreign competitors such as the Ferrari 250 GT, the Iso Rivolta , the Jensen C-V8 , the Aston Martin DB4 , the Bristol 408 or the models from Maserati .

Some famous Facel II owners were Lionel Bart , Ringo Starr , Mohammad Reza Pahlavi , Norodom Sihanouk , Tony Curtis, and Charlie Drake .
