From 1970 to 1988, skilled worker for manufacturing equipment was an apprenticeship in industry in the GDR . From today's perspective, the job description of the precision mechanic (formerly: toolmaker ) or tool mechanic corresponds most closely to that of the skilled worker for manufacturing equipment.

The vocational training for skilled workers for manufacturing equipment lasted due to the comparatively higher technical requirements for half a year longer than in most professions the GDR and thus was two and a half years. Due to the lower proportion of practical training, the time to train as a skilled worker for manufacturing equipment with simultaneous acquisition of the Abitur was three years, and thus only another six months longer.

It was an apprenticeship with specialization in different fields, such as B. Fixture construction , measuring and assembly devices , cutting tools , cutting and forming tools , forming tools and primary forming tools .

The skilled worker for production equipment usually worked in an industrial company. Its products were mainly intended for industrial production. However, when practicing this profession, great manual skills, technical understanding and extensive knowledge of all important technologies in metal processing , including the machines used for this, were required.

Due to his extensive training, the skilled worker for production equipment was able to manufacture all components of a device or a cutting tool himself using manual and mechanical processes. If necessary, he could also repair, maintain and adjust his production equipment independently during the production process.
