Professional idiot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A technical idiot (especially in Austria also technical idiot ) is an expert who only knows a problem from the perspective of his specialist field , can only grasp it from his point of view and does not consider all the possibilities and directions that are necessary for complete understanding and Ascertainability of an object, thing or topic would be required. The specialist idiot often finds it difficult to put himself in the shoes of others and to supplement and expand his limited perspective. He rejects other possible ways of looking at things due to selective perception ( egoism , narcissism ) and the resulting ignorance (see Semmelweis reflex ).

etymology

The word “specialist idiot” is derived historically from the term “specialist idiotism”. The German writer Jean Paul (1763–1825) pointed out this social phenomenon at a relatively early stage with his quote “Every specialist is a donkey in his or her field” . The term "Fachidiotismus" ( French idiotisme du métier ) itself was first used by Karl Marx in his 1847 published in French in the work Misère de la philosophie . The German translation of this work as Das Elend der Philosophie did not appear until 1885. There it says: "What characterizes the division of labor in modern society is the fact that it produces specialties, specialists and with them specialist idiotism."
