Fadumo Korn (also written as Faduma ; * 1964 ) is a native Somali who has lived in Germany since 1979 and became famous for her 2004 autobiography Born in the Great Rain and her work against the circumcision of female genitals . In 2011 she received the Federal Republic of Germany's Medal of Merit . In 2020 she started a petition with the aim of anchoring the topic of female genital mutilation in the training of key people such as doctors and social workers.

Life

Fadumo Korn was born in 1964 as a nomad girl in rural Somalia. She was circumcised at the age of seven. As a result, she suffered from inflammation in the genital area, was no longer able to follow her family on marches through the desert and was then sent to a wealthy uncle in the capital Mogadishu . There she was confronted with an urban environment for the first time and was able to attend school. However, she never got completely healthy and later also suffered from rheumatism . Since the doctors in Mogadishu could not do anything about it, Fadumo was sent by her uncle to Italy and finally to Germany. She has lived in Munich since 1979 . She is married to the German Walter Korn and has a son with him.

Sociopolitical action

In 2004 her autobiography Born in the Great Rain was published , through which she became known in German-speaking countries. In 2012 she founded the association NALA eV Education instead of circumcision , which campaigns against female genital mutilation . Fadumo Korn is a translator and author and works for an organization that advocates better health care for migrant women. She leads a group in which circumcised girls can exchange ideas and accompanies women who have decided to have their vulva restored to the operating room. On June 25, 2020, Fadumo Korn met Family Minister Franziska Giffey to hand over a petition she had started, which more than 125,000 people had signed. Among other things, the activist calls for the topic to be included in the training and further education of doctors, lawyers, police officers, midwives, social workers and educators.

In 2007 she was awarded the Münchner Lichtblicke sponsorship award. In April 2011 she was awarded the Federal Republic of Germany's Medal of Merit.
