Fagas

Fagas ( Greek Φαγάς ) or Sphinx ( Greek Σφίγξ ) is the name of a mountain in Boeotia , which is about 13 km northwest of Thiva . To the west of the 565 m high mountain lies the Kopaïs and east of the Yliki Lake . In ancient times it was called Sphingion ( Greek Σφίγγιον ; Latin Sphingium ), Phikion ( Greek Φίκιον or Greek Φίκειον ; Latin Phicium ) or Phoinikion ( Greek Φοινίκιον ; Latin Phoenicium ) and was considered to be the home of the Sphinx .

Lore

The Sphinx sat on the mountain and puzzled everyone who passed by. If he could not solve it, he would be devoured by her. Only Oedipus was able to solve the riddle and the Sphinx plunged herself to her death.

Medeon was located at the foot of the Sphingion in ancient times . It was also named after Mount Phoinikios. Onchestos was 3 km southwest of the mountain on the Stenis Pass .
