The flag jellyfish (Semaeostomeae) or flag mouth jellyfish are an order of the umbrella jellyfish (Scyphozoa). They live pelagically with around fifty species in the upper layers of the world's oceans.
Appearance
Flag jellyfish have a typical jellyfish shape with a rather flat umbrella and only small marginal lobes. At their mouth opening they carry the long drawn out edges of the leadpipe called four flags. They are very transparent and often have blue, yellow, green or purple markings. Since they are often found in large schools, the sea surface can appear colored by them. Flag jellyfish can reach umbrella diameters of a few centimeters to over two meters in some fire jellyfish from the Cyaneidae family . The cup-shaped generation of polyps is two to seven millimeters in size.
